Cape Classic 380 Routes
The Cape Classic will be based in Montagu, Western Cape on the famous Route 62, each day starting at the Mimosa Lodge, Church Street.
Day 1 : The Koo Valley - out and back
7:00 am Start from Mimosa Lodge
Riders will assemble at the start venue and ride up the majestic Koo valley where the formidable Burgers and Rooihoogte passes await. In between two climbs will be a light hearted time trial of 7.5kms for those who wish to compete for the sponsor’s prizes and also to beat the new average speed record of 55.4kph set in 2024 by Joe Pieterse. The Stage is 100km long and involves a total climb of 1500m. We will ride as a peloton but given the nature of the climbs and descents some splintering of the groups will be inevitable.
A little known but beautiful valley, little used but with good road surfaces provides two challenging climbs on the way out and a lightning fast descent on the way back to a water point at Oupa Batt se Winkel. Then a 39km cruise back to Montagu for lunch and jersey presentations at the beautiful BluVines venue.
Day 1: 100km distance, 1500m elevation
Day 2: The Tradouws
7:00 am Start from Mimosa Lodge
We head out of Montagu again through the Cogmans Kloof Pass and turn left before Ashton towards Swellendam. At 35km we join the final part of the Coronation Double Century route passing over Bakoondhoogte Pass and those rolling roads. At 39km the first flagged section starts and lasts for approximately 14km and a water point at the Keurbomen Cheese Stall. Negotiating Swellendam with the assistance of Swellendam Provincial Traffic department will see us on the N2 before turning for Suurbraak and a race up the stunning Tradouw Pass to determine the final KOM/QOM Jersey winners. Turning right onto the R62 will see us in less than 1km at our new lunch stop – Diesel & Creme. After lunch we tackle the long climb of Op de Tradouw and its fast descent towards Montagu. The longest stage at 162km and 1870m of climbing will be challenging but rewarding.
Day 2: 160km distance, 1870m elevation
Day 3: A Cruise around the Breede River
7:00 am Start from Mimosa Lodge
The new route introduced in 2021 was declared a picturesque success and has become a firm favourite with the riders. However by popular demand the route will be shortened in 2025 by about 25km.
The route loops around the Breede river, on leaving Montagu we turn left towards the Arabella wine farm. Crossing the Breede river at the steel bridge which heralds the start of a 14km Points Jersey section , which finishes just before our water (and coffee) point at Bonnievale Cellars. From the Cellars we turn back through Bonnievale town before returning to Montagu via Ashton. Finishing at Die Kloof Padstal for a champagne reception, lunch and prize giving, the stage is 80km long with approximately 480m of climbing.
Day 3: 80km distance, 480m elevation
