Two courses on offer!
- Shorter [approximately 45km] with easier navigation. Aimed at teams of 2-4 with limited AR [Adventure Racing] experience.
- Longer [proximately 65km] with technical more challenging route sections and with some challenging navigation sections. More experienced solos and/or teams of 2-4.
Date: 1 March 2025
Start time: 5h30
Area:Plettenberg Bay rural.
The race start will be a 3km run without packs and will include a water crossing to the start of the paddle leg. Your boats will already have been dropped off here by you/your second before you will drive to the start which will be about 12-15 minutes drive away.
The first T will be at the end of the paddle/start of the hiking/run/kloofing leg. Your boat will need to be collected at this point and you will get your hiking gear from the second [you won’t paddle with your race pack – just some hydration/snack for the paddling leg.]
The 2nd T will be at the end of your hiking leg and starting your mtb leg which is the last leg of the race. This T will also be the finish venue for the race – your mtb leg will be a circular route.
Disciplines for both routes/courses:
- 3km Coastal run which will include a water crossing. The run and paddle is deemed as one leg as there is no formal Transition in-between.
- Paddle. K1, K2, Kayaks, surf-skis. No Inflatable boats and a kayak as in sea kayak type - plastic or glass fiber. Not a white-water kayak. If you choose to paddle in a surf-ski make sure you have at least a vlei rudder with a grass deflector fitted. There are sections of floating grass in some areas.
- Hike/run/kloofing. The kloofing section will be on the more challenging route/course which will include more challenging navigation.
- Mountain bike. Forest and plantation roads, jeep track and single tracks.
Approximate distances - longer, more technical course:
- Run -3km - this forms part/leading into the paddle i.e. there is no transition - you will get to your boat and start paddling.
- Flat water paddle - 13-14km
- Hike/run/kloofing - 14-16km
- Mtb - 30-35km
Approximate distances - shorter, easier course:
- Run -3km - this forms part/leading into the paddle i.e. there is no transition - you will get to your boat and start paddling.
- Flat water paddle - 13-14km
- Hike/run/kloofing - 12-13km
- Mtb - 20-25km
Compulsory equipment per COMPETITOR:
- Mtb and helmet
- Boat to paddle in - as per above info. Pfd/Life jacket and paddle
- A 10 liter capacity back pack should be sufficient - as long as you can get your race kit in. Please note that this might be a weather dependent scenario. More kit required for wet/cold weather.
- 100% Waterproof rain jacket with long sleeves and hood.
- Space blanket
- whistle
- 2 liter water capacity.
- Nutrition/food for the duration of each leg.
Compulsory equipment per TEAM/SOLO:
- Compass. If there is sufficient demand for for novice teams to learn the basics of AR and basic navigation skills, I can hold a half day course on Saturday, 22 Feb at R100 pp. Plettenberg Bay area. Contact Uge if you are interested in that - 0826583078.
- Map bag or similar to keep it dry in case of wet weather. A few A4 size ziplock bags might also work but make sure the seal is sealed properly - never guaranteed.
- Bike repair kit.
- Map board [MTB leg] for the navigator which can be attached to the mtb handle bar/stem area. A4 size hard board or similar size would do the trick. Just use elastic or bungy cord to hold the map in place.
- Mtb odometer which shows distance travelled on the bike leg. Very important for basic mtb navigation.
- Cell phone. For emergencies only. Never to be used to try and assist with your navigation unless you are seriously lost! In that case. In that case you/your team will be deemed unofficial competitor/s. Integrity is a vital and integral part of Adventure Racing. Honor that!
- First Aid Kit containing: Wound dressing, antiseptic cream, antihistamine, triangular bandage, trauma dressing, elastic plaster bandage. A 7.5 to 10cm width is perfect. Also normal 7.5-10cm wide strap bandage.
Recommended items:
- Sunblock
- Hat/Cap
- Buff
- Take photos with your "offline" cell phone or small camera.
Basic rules:
- No GPS type technology allowed. If you have a smart watch, lock it/take it off the mode that might enable you to measure distance, show location etc.
- Team members must stay together at ALL times - the general acceptable distance is 50m or less. You have to be visible to one another within that distance.
- It is normal practice to help another team in need and "must assist" in case of emergency.
