The Knysna Turaco: A Colorful and Enchanting Bird of South Africa. The Knysna turaco (Tauraco corythaix), or, in South Africa, Knysna loerie, is a large turaco, one of a group of African musophagidae birds. Tucked away in the lush forests of South Africa's Garden Route lies a bird that's sure to take your breath away. With its vibrant blue and green plumage and unmistakable call, the Knysna Turaco is a true icon of the region. But this bird is much more than just a pretty sight to behold. From its unique nesting habits to its fascinating social structure, the Knysna Turaco is a true marvel of the avian world.

Beyond its stunning appearance, the Knysna Turaco is known for its interesting behaviors. One of the most notable behaviors of the bird is its unusual call. The bird's call is often described as a loud, grating sound, which is both haunting and beautiful. When calling, the bird often bobs its head and spreads its crest feathers, making for a truly enchanting sight.

The Loerie Hiking Trail forms part of the Friemersheim research and protection project of the Loerie "Knysna " tauraco.

We start the route at the VGK Church in Kretzen Street where a 10-15 minute general history are being shared by Mr Jeremy van Wyk about the Friemersheim settlement, the architecture of the Church building and the Fellowship Association. We then proceed towards the entrance to the Loerie Hiking Trail. A short overview about the Research project are being shared focusing on native knowledge, after which we will continue in a circular direction to complete the Loerie Hiking Trail. We then return to the start at the VGK Church to complete the circuit.

? Suitable lightweight hydration-/backpack/hip pouch 

? Hydration/bottled water

? Sunscreen

? Hat/head gear

? Suitable non-slip shoes

? Snacks

? Lightweight windproof jacket

? Fleece/midlayer depending the weather

? Your own emergency items, such as bandage, small petroleum jelly, blister plasters, etc

✨ Optional items:

Fingerless gloves, hiking poles, beanie, buffs, sunglasses.

We'll park our vehicles accross the Friemersheim VGK Church in Kretzen Rd where we'll meet from 7h45. 

♡ Hike starts strictly at 8h00.

? Tickets for these hikes are all inclusive, excluding all refreshments. Arrangements towards lifts/transport and other communication are done via the w/a group:-
