Saldanha Health Weekend
Start & Finish Venue: Saldanha Military Base
During World War II Saldanha Bay assumed great importance. The occupation of the Suez Canal by Axis forces early in the war forced the allies to rely on the Cape sea route to pass between the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans.
Saldanha Bay was identified as a convoy staging point. In 1942 the 8th Heavy Battery of the Coastal Artillery set up coastal defence guns at South Head, Baviaansberg, Malgaskop and Elands point. A boom defense system was laid between Hoedjies Point and Marcus Island and Elands Point and it was administered by the SA Naval Forces. The breakwater was built in 1976 and is 1,8 km long. It connects the main land with Marcus Island.
Due to the huge growth in numbers from The First Saldanha Health Marathon on 2023 to 2024, a decision was made to include the military base as part of the historical aspects of the beautiful Bay of Saldanha and still include the 360 degree sea view on the Transnet breakwater route. Some gravel are thus part of the road race, but one does not require the use of trail-running shoes.
