SAFETY

Safety is one of our biggest concerns when we think cycling in South Africa, whether it be on tar or dirt roads. The amazing Think Bike Marshals will be on hand to assist with traffic control and rider safety along the route.

𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘴𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘦 𝟷𝟶𝟶% 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦, 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘥𝘰 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦.

Our aim is to make this ride safe, enjoyable and to give you the opportunity to ride your bike for the day with the best support possible.
With the Think Bike Marshals we have consistently been in good hands on every outride and are confident we can achieve this at every ride ahead.

Route

  • A gpx file will be shared with all entrants closer to the date of the outride.
  • You MUST load the file onto your gps
  • The route is marked and marshals will assist with direction where possible
  • If you do not have a gps device, do not worry. It is not mandatory to have one. Use the buddy system and ensure to ride with someone who knows the route.
  • At a distance of 200km, the ride departs Pedal & Sprocket in the direction of Broadacres. Just after the N14 a left turn takes there group past Northern Farms and towards Main Road. A scenic ride awaits along Hennops River Road as you head in the direction of Harties. Most of the climbing for the route will present itself in the first half of the ride, but what the first half lacks in flat roads, it more than makes up for in beauty. Take a moment and look around! Once over Saartjiesnek you’ll then take on Zilkaatsnek and the first section of Kommandonek to then say goodbye to most of the climbing for the day. The route will continue north but around the western side of Brits to avoid midday traffic. After passing Roodekoppies Dam, the route heads South West, before turning right onto the familiar R556 to Sun City. Passing Sun City, the route continues for a few kilometres onto Sundown Country Estate.
  • There are no road closures. Riders must adhere to the rules of the road and the marshals directions when given.

Group Info

We have three groups available for you to choose from and ride in, according to your riding strength. Check the average speeds and the correlating start time for each group. Ensure you are comfortable with the average speed as your moving speed throughout the ride. This speed does not include stops, which we have accounted for separately.

Average Speed

  • Group 1 | 200km | 30km/hr
  • Group 2 | 200km | 28km/hr
  • Group 3 | 200km | 26km/hr

Start Times

  • Group 1 | 07H00
  • Group 2 | 07H05
  • Group 3 | 07H10

GROUP DYNAMICS

  • This is not a race!
  • Everyone MUST stay together as a group – this is a “no-drop” ride.
  • Should you feel the need to ride ahead of the group, you are accepting that you no longer want to be a part of the group.
  • Anyone riding ahead will not receive any marshal assistance.
  • Ensure when entering a group that you can ride the advertised speed.
  • The Group Leader will ensure the group rides at the correct speed. Respect their instructions to speed up or slow down.
  • Ride smart.
  • Read the below Water Point info for more on times and locations.
  • Read the below Lunch info for these timings.
  • The minimum speed enforced is the advertised speed of the groups. If you cannot maintain the speed of the group, you will be asked to load into the support vehicle.
  •  We cannot allow leniency on cut-of times as the bus and bicycle trailer must be loaded in Pilanesberg asap to get everyone back to Lanseria.

Bag Drop

Small Bags:

Pack your small bag the day before so you can drop your small bag in the designated support vehicle, without any delay. The small bag can be packed with any spares, nutrition, chargers, etc. that you may need throughout the day. Your small bags will be available at the brunch stop, then again for you to collect at the finish.

Large Bags:

Your large bag will be transported on the bus and only available at the finish. You will receive a numbered armband, with your bag also having the same numbered band attached to it. You can then retrieve your bag at the finish by showing your numbered armband. Pack any comfortable, dry clothes, shower products and anything else you may need at the finish. It’s a good idea to bring a change of clothes for the bus transfer back from Pilanesberg.

Water & Check Points

Three Fully Stocked Water Points

Every water point will be fully stocked with 32GI, water, coke, banana’s, crunchies and sweets. At various water points we will change things up so you’re not eating the same thing all day.

200km Water Points & Lunch Distance:

  • 40km – Water Point 1
  • 80km – Water Point 2
  • 120km – Lunch
  • 160km – Water Point 3

Cut-off Times:

Drake Events Management has the right to ask anyone to get into the support vehicles along the route, should they feel that the rider is not keeping up with the pace. Please be aware that we cannot have riders arriving late in Pilanesberg, as all bikes and riders need to still get loaded onto busses and transported back to the start venue.

200km
120km – Lunch | 11H30
160km – WP3 | 13H05

This is a no-drop ride. If you cannot hold the average speed of the group you entered into, you will be asked to get into the support vehicle. For safety, no-one will be allowed to ride solo on the route.

Lunch

  • Beestekraal Stasie Restaurant welcomes you for an early lunch at their awesome and unique venue.
  • Just past the halfway mark, at 120km, you have a great light lunch stop to look forward to.
  • Box Bar by Drake Events will be serving refreshments at the lunch stop.
  • Charge your gps units at the Rapid Charge Solutions mobile charging station.
  • Lunch will be served from 10H00-11H50 for the various paced groups.
  • If you arrive behind your group, you may be asked to get into the support vehicle.
  • The proposed cut-off time for riders at the lunch-stop is 11H50 for the third group on the road. This is the time that all riders need to have departed from the lunch stop, to ride to water point 3.
  • Drake Events want you to finish and will use discretion at all cut-off points to try keep you on the route, where possible.

Vehicle Support

  • Squirt Chain Lube will be available in the support vehicles and at the water points so your chain stays clean, lasts long and extends drive train life.
  • Every vehicle will have a first aid kit.
  • Your small bag will be stored safely inside one support vehicle, taken to the lunch stop for you to access, then available for you at the finish.
  • There will not be one dedicated support vehicle behind a group, but rather various vehicles along the route. If at any point you have an emergency, please contact the Drake Events Management team.

Finish Venue & Accommodation

Sundown Country Estate boasts 242 beds across their establishment with various options to accommodate all rooms requests.

Book a room to stay over at Sundown Country Estate for the weekend. Bookings are subject to confirmation and will work on a first come first serve basis.

Shuttle & Bicycle Transfer

Shuttle:

After you arrive in Pilanesberg, we will load your bikes as quickly (and carefully) as possible whilst you enjoy a drink and bite to eat. Relax, unwind and talk about memories made.

We will have various 21-seater shuttles available. As riders will be finishing at various times, we’ll aim to send off a shuttle and trailer as soon as we can, to avoid long waits. However, the last shuttle/s will only leave once the last riders have finished their ride.

Depending on the uptake for the transfer options, one 40 seater may be used, in which case everyone will leave together in one bus with the bicycle trailer.

Bicycle Transport

We will load your bicycle safely and securely onto the BCycle Bicycle Transport Trailer. When you arrive back at the start venue, your bicycle will be offloaded for you to take home.

Apparel

  • All riders will have the opportunity to buy Drake Events SOX. (R100 per pair)
  • All riders will have an opportunity to buy an official Drake Events jersey, provided by Van H. (R1500 per jersey)
  • Don’t forget to include your order on the registration form.
  • All orders for jerseys must be in by no later than 15 June.
