THE HERO’S JOURNEY CONTINUES…. FILOTIMO ULTRA MARATHON OF HONOUR 2021
Based on the triumphant success of the first Ultra Marathon of Honour 2020, the Machi Filotimo Cancer Project will host its second Ultra Marathon of Honour on 29 May 2021, proudly partnered by BMW Bryanston and IDEASMAN.
Our Brand Ambassador, Temotio Jacopo, know to us as Timo, will be running 115KM IN 12 HOURS, starting just outside Parys and ending at BMW Bryanston. This amazing feat of strength and endurance epitomizes the journey of a cancer sufferer.
Timo will take on this challenge to fund the fight against Cancer and to honour the taken.
We are hosting this Virtual event online to increase awareness and raise funds. We want to have as many inspiring sports fanatics join in this epic event. You can choose to run, walk, cycle or even swim to make up your #115KM or #115Minutes. The distance must be completed in one session on any day during the period 10 May to 16 June 2021
May Month is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and our aim is to create awareness to prevent skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in South Africa with about 20 000 reported cases every year and 700 deaths. South Africa has the second-highest incidence of skin cancer in the world after Australia. The good news is that skin cancer can be prevented by respecting the sun. The three most common types of skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and malignant melanoma. Melanoma Awareness is represented by the colour black.
Our Filotimo Melanoma Cancer Champions are amazing people who in the face of adversity and against all the odds, not only survived but lived to tell their story. Together with our project, they are raising awareness about skin cancer through our weekly webinars and social media, where we educate on ways to prevent skin cancer.
We would like to expand our reach by creating more workshops throughout the year which will include visits to schools through our FILOTIMO KIDS PROGRAMME to educate the youth on skin health as South African children are more at risk from sunburn at school due to inadequate sun protection. In South Africa, skin cancer remains the most common cancer with about 20 000 reported cases and 700 deaths a year, making it a significant health problem.
According to CANSA, one of our Partnered Institutions, most of a person’s lifetime exposure to the sun occurs before the age of 18, which makes sun-safe practice an absolute must at pre-schools, primary schools, and high schools.
The last 5KM stretch of the Ultra Marathon will be super exciting as our Hero and his team will be joined by our amazing Filotimo Cancer Champions and partners including TransformHERS Fitness Programme and Athletics Club, in support, as they run together, UNITED AS ONE, to cross the finish line and share at the moment, as our Hero delivers a message from Machi to all Cancer Warriors. The estimated time of arrival is 16H00.
By reaching our target, we will be in a position to continue to do the amazing work that we do, in the spirit of Filotimo, by creating awareness, educating on the signs and symptoms that lead to cancer, its treatment options and providing palliative care to those in need, through our medical partners and institutions. The funds raised for this event will be utilized for education and awareness with a specific focus on Skin Cancer and to grow the Machi Filotimo Cancer Project both Nationally and Internationally.
Help us to continue to do what we do... in the spirit of Filotimo.

Virtual Race,
Route information | A virtual race is a race that can be run, walked or cycled from any location you choose. You get to complete your own race, at your own pace, within the time frame as stipulated by your particular event. There are no parking problems, no crowds and no long Porta Potty lines. There is no start gun or nervous, pre-race chitchat with other athletes. There's not even an official starting line! That's the kind of flexibility offered by virtual races, a new trend in the running and cycling community. Athletes who sign up for a virtual race register online and simply choose their route of choice. Once you are finished times can be uploaded via various timing apps as provided by your event organiser. Details of the timing app and how it works will be mailed to all participants closer to race day. |
