FUNKY fynbos festival TRAIL RUNNING

Distances, prices, starting times:

• Fynbos Trail Run: 30km - R 300 – 07:45
• Funky twelve ‘k’: 12km - R 150 – 08:30
• Lomond Farm Run: 5km - R 20 – 09:00 (no timing)

Sunday 23 Sept 06:00 – 08:30 - at Lomond Wine Estate

Timing will be done by Live Time (Entryninja), so please bring your SAS timing chip with.  Otherwise you can rent one for R10 or buy one for R50.

Fynbos Trail Run

This is a toughie with three steep climbs and a total altitude gain of 1229m. The runs starts and ends at Lomond Wine Estate. The first water table at the 6km mark under the shade of ancient white pear and wild olive trees. The trail meanders through magnificent fynbos to the Grootbos Milkwood Forest where runners will follow the forest trail path under these majestic, thousand year old trees. The route then takes runners down through pristine fynbos in full spring time bloom and through the ancient and milkwood forest to the second water point at Fynbos Retreat at the 21km mark. From here it’s down into beautiful forest and a surprise waterfall and then up the second major climb and then descends quite steeply into Flower valley through the beautiful Stinkhoutsbos Forest and down the valley to the finish line at Lomond Wine Estate.

There will be 2 water points on route but runners are expected to carry their own hydration as well as the normal compulsory gear (water proof jacket, charged cell phone, space blanket, whistle, buff / beanie, warm top).

 Running time: Top runners can expect to take around 140-160mins to complete the 30km route and back markers about 4.5 hours. 

Funky twelve ‘k’

This run is suitable for the novice-intermediate trail runners. The routes are by no means flat but it’s on farm roads, jeep tracks and a well-used hiking trail. The first three kilometres provides a relatively easy, gentle warm up along the lower slopes of Flower Valley, before a steep climb up the fynbos-clad slopes. At the top you will experience spectacular 360 degree views across the Agulhas Plain towards the distant Cape Agulhas at the southern tip of Africa, as well as beautiful views of Dyer Island and the South Atlantic Ocean. From the highest point at the 7km mark the trail winds down a jeep track to the Stinkwood forest where runners will be treated to the shade of ancient indigenous trees and run along the stream before exiting the forest for the final charge down the valley to the finish at the Funky Festival grounds at Lomond Wine Estate.

 Running time: Top runners can expect to take about 40-45 minutes, while back markers will take about 2 hours. 

Funky 5/6 km Farm Run

This run is for beginners and families who want to participate in the Funky without any real fitness concerns. The route offers an easy run around the vines and the dam providing a gentle fun experience.  Pram and kiddies bike friendly!

Funky Fynbos DUO:

The 2018 challenge is on, who will be the Funky Fynbos "Ysterman" and "Ystervrou". If you own a bike and a pair of 'takkies", then this is the one to do. Enter both days and enjoy the spectacular beauty of this area and challenge your body to the max.
