About the Waterberg Extreme MTB Race

The Waterberg Extreme mountain bike event will take riders and their support crews over 330km of farm and district roads from the rural Brits area in North West to Thabazimbi, through the scenic Waterberg Mountains.

The race offers everyone who enjoys cycling a chance to participate in the ultimate single-stage mountain bike race in South Africa. For those new to mountain biking who want to enter as a relay team, or endurance athletes who enjoy the long-distance challenge, this event caters for you.

The proximity of the start is within a 70km radius of Johannesburg, Krugersdorp, Pretoria and Rustenburg, making it an accessible location for Gauteng and the North West MTB enthusiasts to join this wonderful new event.

Riders can enter a solo rider, two person relay team, or four person relay team. With the relay team strategy will be important to determine which stages should be completed by stronger/weaker riders. With that said, it is important to note that a rider in the 4 rider relay will still complete at least 145km, and in the 2 rider relay at least 200km. The event takes place on farm- and district gravel roads, with no real technical riding involved, some sections of the route does however comprise very thick sand and loose stones.

The event will kick off the September long weekend, providing sufficient recovery time afterwards, before you need to return to work. Bring the family along and make a long weekend of it by staying over ‘till the Monday at one of the lodges near the finish in the surrounding Waterberg Mountains.
