VOC SIGNAL GUN, PAARL MOUNTAIN
From 1734, the Dutch East India Company (originally Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie –VOC) used signal guns to call up citizens for the Cape’s defense. When the gun was heard, men of military age had to arm themselves and ride to Cape Town on horseback to assemble under their banners. The guns were placed on hills and mountains in four different areas, sounding the alarm across the Swartland/Sandveld, towards the Olifants River/Witsenberg, Karoo and Overberg/Southern Cape. There were 35 signal stations; the signalmen were the farmers and their servants. This gun was cast in about 1700 in Finspång, Sweden. It is a muzzleloader that fired a ball of 6 Amsterdam pounds (2,964 kg), but loose powder was used for signaling. It is 2,23 m long with a diameter of 39 cm behind the touch-hole. During the VOC period, the signal station was on the western side of Paarl Mountain.
